The spread of Multi-system Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) has raised concerns among pediatricians. Children manifest this syndrome which usually involves multiple organs about four to six weeks after a COVID-19 infection.
Health experts say that MIS-C happens due to an antigen produced by the body to fight the COVID-19 infection. The lower number of COVID-19 tests conducted on children is the reason for the late detection of post-Covid complications among them.
The community medicine department of Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital reports that 56 per cent of children contracted infections from family members. While not all MIS-C cases are fatal, they are worrisome because of the involvement of the heart, liver, and kidneys.
Apart from India, a high number of MIS-C cases have been reported in other countries after their COVID-19 peaks. Pediatricians are now scared about getting more MIS-C cases once the peak in India is over. There were three cases of MIS-C last year and this time again, there were two cases in the Fortis Healthcare when the second wave hit the state, according to reports.
Another post-Covid complication among children is the Kawasaki Disease. It is a rare ailment affecting children who show symptoms of high fever, redness of the eyes, rashes and diarrhea. Doctors are now insisting that a vaccine for children should be developed at the earliest to keep them safe.
