When will children in India get inoculated against COVID-19? It could be as early as August 2021, if the health minister Mansukh Mandaviya is to be believed. He said this at a recent BJP parliamentary party meeting. There are concerns about the impact of an impending third wave on children. A vaccine would enable the reopening of schools and the resumption of outdoor activities. A timeline for September had been given earlier according to data from clinical trials of Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin. The first trial began in the age group of 12-18yrs followed by 6-12 yrs. Trials for 2-6yrs are currently underway.
Ahmedabad-based Zydus Cadila had filed for an EUA* with the Drugs Controller General of India. This will allow Zydus Cadila to administer the ZyCov-D vaccine to everyone above the age of 12. Pfizer-BioNTech's vaccine could also be an option in India if it gets approved by the government. It is currently on hold because the manufacturers seek an indemnity clause in the contract.
